May Christmas Block of the Month

This class is for beginners, but anyone is welcome to join us to make this Christmas sampler.
Begins Jan. 22, 2025 and goes through December 2025 to finish a Christmas themed quilt.
Meets the 3rd Wednesday of each month from 10 am to 12:30 pm.

May Class meets May 21, 2025

This month’s Christmas Block of the Month features two festive designs: a classic ornament made from four Drunkard’s Path units, and a charming paper-pieced candle.

You’ll learn how to sew curved seams by joining convex (outward) and concave (inward) pieces—skills that create the round "ball" effect at the center of the ornament block. Then, dive into the basics of paper piecing with the candle block, perfect for achieving crisp corners and precise details, especially in miniature designs.

For the Ornament Block:

  • Four 7" squares of background fabric

  • Four 7" squares of ornament fabric

  • One 3" x 1½" piece of fabric for the top of the ornament

  • Matching thread

  • Template plastic or freezer paper (for creating templates)

  • Optional: Metallic gold/silver fabric scraps and decorative trims (these will be provided for you to use if desired)

For the Candle Block (Paper Piecing):

Five different fabrics:

  • Candlestick: one 2¼" x 6½" rectangle

  • Flame: one 2½" x 2½" square

  • Base: one 2½" x 10½" rectangle

  • Background:

    • Two 1¼" x 2¼" rectangles

    • Two 5" x 8½" rectangles

    • Two 2½" x 3" rectangles

  • Borders:

    • One 3" x 20" rectangle

    • One 3" x 30" rectangle

Notions & Tools:

  • Neutral-colored thread

  • Open-toe or clear presser foot (helpful for paper piecing)
